This bridge was an uncommon but beautiful example of a smaller scale open-spandrel concrete deck arch bridge. It retained good historic integrity, including original railings that curled around the abutments at the ends. An original marble plaque remained on the bridge as well.
Greene County, Pennsylvania is a location where a serious hypocrisy is observed. While numerous wooden covered bridges have been preserved in the county, other historic bridge types are not preserved, such as this unusual small-scale open-spandrel concrete deck arch bridge which since 1984 was officially declared eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. While narrow, functionally obsolete wooden covered bridges are maintained for vehicular traffic in the county, this graceful historic concrete arch bridge was demolished upon completion of its gut-wrenching, ugly replacement slab even though it was not in the way of this new bridge nor the realigned roadway. The bridge could have and should have been left standing closed to all traffic as a historic landmark.
