One of two vertical lift bridges built on this canal. The main lift span was built in 1957 but reportedly at least some parts of the approach spans date to 1932, although it appears the highway deck is supported by modern steel girders on the approach. It is possible the piers date to 1932. It appears in the 1930s this was built as an all-fixed bridge with anticipation of adding the lift span, which happened in 1957. Wikipedia reports a span length of 361 feet however when measured in Google Maps (which has shown to be surprisingly accurate) the span length appears to be only 215-230 feet. Dominion Structural Steel was the contractor for the superstructure, and Canada Iron Foundries was the mechanical contractor. The bridge originally carried both highway and railway on its deck. Sometime in the 1990s the approaches were rebuilt. Canadian National Railways had abandoned its track from Valleyfield to Cantic (close to the border) and Hydro-Québec, as the owner, decided to remove the railway part and widen the highway, resulting in that project.
