This rare King Bridge Company cast and wrought iron bowstring truss bridge has been altered by having its top chord filled with concrete! The deck was also replaced with a concrete deck, with the concrete extending into the truss web and partially encasasing the truss members. This is a most unfortunate alteration as the concrete will tend to trap moisture and deteriorate the iron, and it could cause truss members to bend since they can no longer flex as originally intended. Despite alteration, the bridge remains a rare bridge type, and it is the only such bridge in San Antonio, and as such it contributes to the unusually large and diverse collection of historic bridge types that can be found in San Antonio. The bridge serves pedestrian traffic only in a park setting. The bridge reportedly dates to 1880. The bridge was moved to the park in 1925 from its original location on Fourth Street (Lexington Avenue) at the river in the downtown area. Lengths given are estimates.
