Bridge Documentation

This bridge is a large multi-span example of a wrought iron arch bridge. The bridge replaced an earlier laminated timber arch bridge dating to 1837-9. From a distance, the bridge has the architectural appearance of the timber arch bridge it replaced, but viewed up closed, the built-up riveted construction of a wrought iron bridge is clear. A bridge of simiilar design is located east of the city.

Official Heritage Listing Information and Findings Listed At: Grade II* Discussion: List Entry Number: 1120788 NZ 26 SE NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE STEPNEY ROAD 12/534 Ouseburn viaduct with 12.11.65 accommodation arch GV II* Railway viaduct. 1837-9 by John and Benjamin Green for Newcastle and North Shields Railway Company; altered and width doubled 1869 for North-Eastern Railway Company. Sandstone ashlar with iron arches and superstructure (added in 1869 when original laminated timber arches were removed). T-section iron lattices between arches and railway bed girders, which are also supported by masonry. Sloped copings to buttressed piers and abutments. Ashlar skew arch over Stepney Road. Historical note: one of the earliest bridges constructed in Britain using the Wiebeking system of laminated wood; the present iron work closely resembles the timber original.
