This bridge is rather plain (some might say ugly) for a historic bridge. It is actually this plain appearance that makes this bridge historic. It is a bridge that was far ahead of its time, as a concrete box girder bridge. At the time it was reportedly the longest span of this type around in the United States. The bridge's design and plain appearance anticipated the eventual direction that bridge design would take in future decades as simpler and plain-looking bridges became the structure types of choice.
