Bridge Documentation

This bridge is an example of a lattice truss bridge. A number of these bridges in this region, usually former Chicago and NorthWestern bridges, are on active Canadian National lines and targeted for demolition and replacement. This bridge however is abandoned and if it faces demolition, it will be for no purpose. This bridge would be great to turn into a rail-trail crossing, either here, or in a new location. The unusual and visually pleasing lattice truss design is historically significant and worth preserving, in addition being worth saving for its beauty. This wide bridge was designed to handle two railroad tracks, but appears that when the tracks were removed, it was only using one set of tracks. Reportedly, a previous bridge was built here in 1895, supplemented by this truss in 1902, and the 1895 span was removed ca. 1960. There is a surviving riveted plate girder bridge next to this one that continues to serve trains.
