Cutouts on vertical member for diagonal members to pass through. Of interest is the use of drilled holes, a technique used before cutting torches were around. Of further interest on this specific bridge is the crude nature of the cutouts, and the fact that they are present even on portions of the verticals where no diagonals are present.
