Bridge Documentation

This small bridge is the only rainbow arch bridge in Florida and also an extremely unusual example of such a bridge built by a Luten company. Daniel Luten was a competing engineer with the inventor of the first type of rainbow arch bridge in America, the Marsh Arch as designed by James Marsh. Luten, in his competition with Marsh, would have condemned rainbow arch bridges as "temporary" bridges because the through arch design cannot be widened to accomodate increased traffic volumes in the future. It is unclear why a rainbow arch bridge was built here, but it might have been for the beauty of the bridge design, and also so that clearance under the deck was maximized for waterflow. And while the various companies across the country authorized to build Luten arch bridges were no doubt encouraged to make use of the Luten patented designs, this bridge is an indication that these companies still retained the freedom to build other bridge designs if that is what the customer wanted. In any case, this bridge is highly significant as the only rainbow arch bridge in Florida, and also a rainbow arch bridge built by a Luten company.
