Although visually this bridge leaves a lot to be desired, this bridge is officially considered historic as an early pre-stressed concrete bridge. From the deck the bridge appears to be a single structure. But in fact it the northbound lanes are carried by a steel stringer bridge dating to 1951 and the southbound bridge (the historic bridge) was built a short time later in 1956. In these short five years, bridge architecture had not changed any, but the state highway department (following nationwide trends) switched to a pre-stressed concrete design. Although the original railings are missing, these two bridges side by side document the transition from steel to concrete in a five year period. They make an interesting comparison.
