Bridge Documentation

One of two vertical lift bridges built on this canal, this one is unique for its combined highway and railway deck. The main lift span was built in 1957 but reportedly at least some of the approach spans date to 1932, which perhaps refers to the riveted railroad girder spans. It appears in the 1930s this was built as an all-fixed bridge with anticipation of adding the lift span, which happened in 1957. The highway deck is supported by modern steel girders on the approach. Wikipedia reports a span length of 274.4 feet however when measured in Google Maps (which has shown to be surprisingly accurate) the span length appears to be only 210 feet (or at least in the 200-220 foot range). Dominion Structural Steel was the contractor for the superstructure, and Canada Iron Foundries was the mechanical contractor.
